SPM and Raman spectroscopy

Course manager

Code : AFMR

Maximum attendance : 6

This training course is designed for advanced users in either SPM or Raman spectroscopy, who want to be introduced to the complimentary technique and who want to learn about the coupling of both techniques. Laboratory teaching will show how the integration of SPM with optical spectroscopy is relevant to perform topographic images with chemical sensitivity. It will emphasize the difficulties of tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy from point spectroscopy to an imaging technique with nanoscale spatial resolution.

Who should attend?

Scientists, engineers, technicians, PhD students who have already acquired good skills in Raman spectroscopy or SPM.

Course Description

This course will consist of lectures (25 %) and laboratory sessions (75 %). The lectures will describe the basic principles of AFM and Raman spectroscopy and will further focus on the integration of Raman spectroscopy with SPM techniques.

Laboratory sessions will first give an introductory to one of both techniques depending on the knowledge of the attendees. Then, they will cover more complex features when the techniques are combined, such as colocalized AFM-Raman spectroscopy, ultra high vacuum STM-Raman spectroscopic measurements and Tip-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy. Tip fabrication and operation are treated in detail. Examples of use for many types of material (bio to chemical industry to semiconductors) with different types of environments are given to illustrate the strengths and weaknesses when the techniques are combined.

Key issues in processing the experimental data are also addressed.
